--- Mercury: ---
Save Your Body From Nature's Deadly Poison

Mercury is listed as one of the top six most poisonous metals on earth, with known human toxicity occurring at doses producing urine levels of 5 ug/L, or five millionths of one gram. Consider that a nickel weighs about 5 grams.

Attention to the true nature of mercury poisoning was slammed home with the discovery that thousands of people had been poisoned by industrial dumping of mercury waste into Japan's bay of Minamata from 1932 until 1968.

Over 5,000 people suffered from mercury poisoning and 456 eventually died. Children were born severely deformed and mentally retarded. Of course, this incident was dwarfed by the results of an accidental 1971 poisoning of 50,000 people in Iraq after they ate bread contaminated with mercury. As a result of that incident, 5,000 died.

While these events alerted the world to the toxicity of high concentrations of mercury, thousands of cases of poisoning with much smaller concentrations of mercury went virtually unnoticed. In fact, as I will illustrate, the two largest sources of mercury poisoning continue to operate through deliberate government-endorsed health policy. The third-greatest source is the failure of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to perform its stated job: protect the environment from chemical pollution.

To listen to government authorities, the No. 1 source of human contamination is coal-burning plants.

But in fact, the primary source of human contamination is right there in your mouth - dental fillings composed of an amalgam of various metals, almost 50% of which is the metallic form of mercury.

Second, until recently, were vaccines. Third is the contamination of fish by coal-burning plants and the run-off of pesticides and herbicides from farmlands into lakes and streams, and the natural pollution of the seas from the sea floor.

At present, our country maintains a schizophrenic policy of having our environmental agencies, like the EPA, step up the cleaning of mercury from the atmosphere, while at the same time other agencies, such as the FDA and Public Health Service (PHS), are on a massive campaign to cover up the dangers of mercury in vaccines and fish.

Remember, the love of money is the root of all evil, and behind this problem are a lot of powerful and wealthy forces. That includes political entities as well as corporate ones.

--- Deadly Metal in Your Mouth ---

Over 150 years ago, dentists discovered a new, less expensive way to fill cavities in teeth.

With silver being so expensive, they found that they could mix an assortment of metals together to form a mixture that was easy to pack into a cavity. The mixture was composed of 45% to 52% mercury, 30% silver and small amounts of copper, zinc and tin.

The medical society at that time - The American Society of Dental Surgeons - opposed its use because of the known toxicity of mercury. It expelled members who continued to use it. Soon, so many dentists were using the toxic mix that the original society collapsed and the rogue dentists replaced it with a new one. It is still with us today. You'll know it as the American Dental Society (ADA).

The ADA has grown into one of the most powerful lobbyists in Washington, and in your state as well. About 150 years later, dentist are implanting 180 million mercury-containing amalgam fillings a year into unsuspecting people's mouths. That includes millions of children.

Because, even early on, medical doctors were aware of the extreme toxicity of mercury, the ADA covered up the danger by creating a grand lie. The group merely told the public and its own member dentists that as an amalgam, mercury was not released but rather stayed safely locked inside the filling.

The ADA continued to tell this lie until just recently, when the evidence was so overwhelming that the group had to admit that the element was released in vapor form and that 80% of that mercury vapor was absorbed into the body.

In fact, a number of studies have shown that blood levels of mercury rise several times when people with amalgam fillings chew or drink hot liquids. In fact, in one study they found that even chewing on a piece of rubber tubing increased blood mercury levels as much as twofold in people with amalgam fillings.

The shocking realization is that people carry their fillings around all the time and they chew frequently.

Just think about how many of us chew gum and drink hot liquids every day. In 1990, the EPA outlawed the use of mercury-filled interior latex paint because studies found that people living in houses covered in this paint had dangerously high mercury levels in their tissue.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) set the safety limit of mercury in the air at 50 ug per meter squared (50 ug/M3) of air. Measurements of the air in the mouths of people with numerous amalgam fillings have exceeded this level (reaching as high as 150 ug/M3).

--- How Dental Amalgam Threatens Pregnant Women ---

Once it had been established that mercury vapor from amalgam was highly absorbed, medical specialists became concerned about pregnant women with fillings - especially those who had amalgam fillings inserted during their pregnancy. Subsequent studies confirmed researchers' fears.

Recently, it has been clearly demonstrated that the mother's mercury levels are directly proportional to the number of amalgam fillings she has. It has also been shown that the concentration of mercury in the baby's body is higher than the mother's - especially in the baby's liver and brain.

It appears that the placenta concentrates the mercury toward the baby, and because of the child's small size, the mercury dose is much more toxic to its tissues than to those of the mother. Faced with this overwhelming data, even the ADA finally issued a warning to its members not to place amalgam fillings in pregnant women.

Unfortunately, they gave no thought to implanting amalgam fillings in female children and teenagers. It is proven that the mercury from these fillings persists in the woman's body even decades after the filings are placed. Certainly, no one could justify using dental amalgam filling on females prior to menopause.

It has been proven that blood mercury levels in children with amalgam filling are higher than those in adults implanted with the same amount of amalgam. Because of the tremendous growth of the brain during the first six to eight years of life (especially the first two years), mercury exposure is especially dangerous.

Some have even linked endometriosis (a condition that can lead to female sterility) to elevated blood mercury levels. There is evidence that it is increasing in incidence.

One effect that high mercury levels have on the unborn baby is that they lower one of the brain's most protective antioxidant molecules - glutathione.

A study by a leading mercury researcher found high levels of lipid peroxidation in babies exposed to mercury prior to birth. When elevated free radical and lipid peroxidation levels in the brain are combined with a loss of the protective glutathione, damage is tremendously magnified. It's like removing all the fire extinguishers from your house and then setting the place on fire. Interestingly, this same combination of factors is also seen in autism.

One fairly recent study found that even very low exposures to mercury could adversely affect fetal brain development. What most people - and many doctors - forget is that people are exposed to numerous sources of mercury every day, including that found in foods, the air you breathe, vaccines, seafood and dental amalgam. This is a fact that is especially ignored by vaccine authorities.

For example, a woman who had a number of amalgam fillings, regularly ate seafood, had been inoculated with mercury-filled vaccines and lived in western Texas (an area with very high atmospheric mercury levels) would expose her baby to significantly higher mercury levels than a woman who had no amalgam fillings, ate little seafood, received no mercury-containing vaccines and lived in Nevada (a state with extremely low air mercury levels).

Doctors and medical researchers assume that everyone has the same exposure levels, but they don't. Even measures of mercury levels in those with amalgam fillings show that some people will have astronomical levels of mercury and others much lower levels, even though they have the same number of fillings. We are all very different individuals.

Yet, we do know that in general the higher the mercury intake, the more harmful it is. And it has been demonstrated in carefully done experiments that children exposed to low levels of mercury during prenatal development show impaired motor speed, concentration and verbal memory.

--- Mercury and Breastfeeding ---

There is no question that breastfeeding is superior to feeding your infant formula.

Yet, if your body is burdened with a high level of mercury, you may want to rethink that option. If you follow the public health authorities' advice on vaccinations - that is, that pregnant women should get their flu vaccine - you will be exposing your child to a greater risk of neurodevelopmental brain injury. This is especially true if you regularly eat seafood and/or have dental amalgam fillings.

Basically, there are three forms of mercury:

- Metallic (the metal)

- Inorganic (like mercuric chloride or mercuric sulfate)

- Organic (such as methylmercury and ethylmercury)

There is considerable debate as to which form is the most harmful, but an abundance of scientific evidence indicates that it's the inorganic form (also called ionic mercury).

Ionic mercury is also the most difficult to remove from the brain. In fact, it stays there permanently. Yet, few people are exposed to ionic mercury directly - most is indirect. Most authorities consider mercury vapor (from amalgam fillings) and organic mercury (from fish and vaccines) to be the major sources of the substance in our environment. However, a number of studies have shown that all these forms are converted into ionic mercury within the tissues, especially in the brain.

A study of Swedish women found that mercury from dental amalgams resulted in substantially higher breast milk mercury levels than did mercury from seafood. It also showed that levels frequently exceed the highest tolerable daily intake proposed by the World Health Organization (0.5 ug/kg).

Because of the risk of high mercury levels in breast milk, babies born to mothers who have numerous amalgam-filled teeth will get a double dose of mercury - once from mom's blood during development, and then from her milk after birth.

There is also growing evidence that some babies are genetically more susceptible to mercury toxicity than others.

--- Toxic Chemicals in the Mind ---

Most of us have heard the old saying "He's mad as a hatter."

It originated from the felt hat industry during the 17th through the 19th centuries. It was commonly observed that people who worked in the industry walked as if they were drunk. They were also quite irritable and exhibited bizarre behavior.

Later it was discovered that a chemical used in the manufacture of felt hats (mercuric nitrite, or "quicksilver") was the culprit. Incidentally, it was recently disclosed that Abraham Lincoln used a medicine that contained high levels of mercury. Poisoning from high doses of mercury has been well described in medical literature and it has been disclosed that mercury is especially toxic to the brain, heart, kidneys and liver.

Because mercury is fat-soluble, it accumulates in the brain (60% fat) and other fat-containing tissue. Once in the brain, all forms (organic and vapor) are converted to the ionic form, which reacts with a number of important structures and chemicals in that vital organ.

But there is a greater concern. Numerous studies have found that mercury, even in very low doses (less than 5ug/l in urine), can alter how the brain functions - especially in terms of memory, concentration, motor control and behavior. Depression, memory loss, moodiness, irritability, a lack of interest in events, a desire to be alone, shyness and outbursts of anger have all been described.

In fact, higher rates of all of these behavioral problems have been seen in studies of people with numerous amalgam fillings as well as many dentists and dental assistants who handle mercury materials.

One study found that low doses of mercury - even for relatively short periods - caused abnormalities on brainwave tests (electrocortigram).

--- Mercury and Neurodegenerative Diseases ---

More and more studies have shown elevated mercury levels in the brain, blood or spinal fluid of people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

One study (Journal of Neural Transmission 1998; 105: 59-68.) found that overall, people with Alzheimer's disease had blood mercury levels twice as high as those who were free of the disease. Even more shocking was the finding that mercury levels were three times higher during the early stages of the disease.

A previous study measured 13 different elements in the brains of people dying from Alzheimer's disease. It compared these to those of matched controls and found that not only did they have higher mercury levels, but they also had much lower levels of selenium and zinc than normal people. Selenium and zinc are known to play a major role in protecting the brain against mercury toxicity.

Dr. Boyd Haley, the chairman of the department of chemistry at the University of Kentucky, demonstrated a major link by showing that mercury - even in incredibly low concentrations - interfered with brain cells' ability to form neurotubulin, a major way brain cells communicate.

Equally important is the finding that as small concentrations chronically activated the brain's immune cells (known as microglia), this led to a slow degeneration of certain areas of the brain. Chronic activation of microglia is seen in all of the neurodegenerative diseases, as well as autism and multiple sclerosis. Several studies have shown improvement in MS patients who had their amalgam fillings removed and subsequently went through chelation to purge them of mercury.

Studies have also shown that high concentrations of mercury accumulate specifically in the motor cells of the spinal cord, which would explain the connection to ALS.

In fact, one report described a young woman who was diagnosed with ALS in a medical university. She made a full recovery when the toxic substance was removed from her body through chelation. This would also explain the 200% increase in ALS among soldiers vaccinated for anthrax during the Gulf War.

A study appearing in the 1999 issue of Mutation Research sheds some light on mercury's particularly intense and damaging effects on the nervous system and heart. Both of these organs have a very high energy requirement, since neither really rests. The vast majority of energy produced in a cell originates in a tiny cell factory known as the mitochondria. The study found that the mitochondria stored the highest concentration of mercury in cells (48%) and that it poisoned many of the energy-producing enzymes.

The latest information shows that a process known as excitotoxicity is the central mechanism by which all of these diseases occur and that microglial activation, release of glutamate and a loss of cellular energy are its central features. (Blaylock RL J American Nutraceutical Association 2003: 6: 21-30.) Mercury can trigger them all, and it does so in very low concentrations.

This would also explain the 10-times increase in Alzheimer's disease observed in elderly people who get annual flu vaccines for five years.

--- Is Eating Seafood Dangerous? ---

The huge amount of mercury that enters the air from coal-burning also ends up in the seas. Likewise, the sea floor belches up natural sources of mercury as well. As a result, a large number of previously safe seafood delicacies are no longer edible. The mercury enters all sea creatures, but some, by a process known as bioaccumulation, have more of the toxic substance than others.

In general, fish that eat other fish have the highest levels - and the larger the fish, the higher the levels. Whales have the highest levels of all.

In the United States, we have a conflict of interest that taints the government's regulation of seafood advisories. While they want to appear to carry out their public health mission, they do not want to harm the seafood and restaurant industries.

For example, if you look at the EPA's Web site, you will find that they say that certain fish should never be eaten, because of their extremely high methylmercury levels. These include shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish. Yet, you can find all of these on the menu at most fine seafood restaurants.

Based on mercury levels, the EPA provides information on how much of the listed fish should be eaten per week. This ignores the fact that mercury accumulates and is stored in the fatty parts of the body, especially the brain.

Even the policy on tuna is confusing.

Experts say that light tuna (skipjack) is relatively safe but that people should restrict their consumption of albacore tuna (also called white tuna). Yet, a recent study by Consumer Reports found that 6% of light tuna contains as much (in some cases twice as much) mercury as albacore tuna. One reason is that some light tuna has yellowfin tuna in it, and this type can have high mercury levels.

My suggestion is to avoid all seafood - especially if you are pregnant, a child or concerned about your brain or heart. If you are determined to eat seafood, at least select one low in mercury, like fishes such as salmon (from the Pacific) or pollock, or even shrimp. However, Gulf shrimp is contaminated with a number of industrial chemicals as well as mercury, especially since Hurricane Katrina.

You can also take a couple of capsules of aged garlic extract and 200 ug of selenium just before your meal.

Both reduce mercury toxicity and improve the removal of that substance from the brain. It is thought that selenium is what protects fish from the mercury. I once visited a wildlife station in Maryland and the biologist said that while the fish in a nearby lake had a high level of mercury, they still seemed to be healthy. I mentioned the selenium connection, and he remarked that the lake also had high levels of that substance.

--- Mercury and Heart Failure ---

A number of studies have shown that the heart is especially sensitive to mercury toxicity and tends to accumulate the toxic substance.

One analysis of people with an often fatal disorder called idiopathic cardiomyopathy found that their heart muscle contained a dose of mercury that was 22,000 times higher than that seen in hearts of other people the same age. This disorder is the leading cause of heart failure - to such a degree that a heart transplant is required.

With heart failure rates rising exponentially, no one is looking at the possibility that vaccines, dental amalgam and other sources of mercury are the cause. But this is especially a danger in the elderly - those with preexisting heart disease who receive yearly flu vaccines. No one is telling them of this very real danger. Remember, the flu vaccines contain a full dose of mercury.

--- Vaccine Dangers - the Truth ---

For more information on vaccines, see my previous newsletter (Vaccinations: The Hidden Dangers).

Suffice it to say that even though most vaccines had their mercury removed as of 2001, the flu vaccines and the Rho immune globulin vaccine still contain a full amount. The CDC instituted new guidelines prescribing the flu vaccine for all pregnant women and for all children between the ages of 6 and 24 months. Then those children are to get shots again annually between the ages of 5 and 18 years. That includes some 42 million schoolchildren.

Should these guidelines be followed, our children would start life with a significant mercury burden and suffer the resulting health consequences. It is important to note that the second-highest site of mercury accumulation in a cell is the nucleus, and studies have shown that even low doses of the toxic substance cause damage to DNA. Damaged DNA can lead to cancer and degenerative brain disease, and it can be inherited by one's offspring.

Some time ago, a decade before public concerns were being voiced, it was disclosed that a memo from drug manufacturer Merck showed that the firm knew children were receiving dangerous levels of mercury from the company's vaccines.

In fact, Dr. Maurice Hilleman, a famous vaccinologist, had written the memo to the president of Merck's vaccine division, telling him that at 6 months of age, children who were on the vaccine schedule were receiving mercury in amounts that were 87 times the maximum levels deemed tolerable by the FDA.

But the warning was ignored, and even more mercury-filled vaccines were added to the schedule of recommended inoculations. State medical societies and public health officials made the new schedules into law, as they do to this day.

Congressman Dan Burton noted during his congressional investigation of vaccines and autism that chairmen and many members of vaccine advisory committees owned stock in vaccine-manufacturing companies. I say these people should be behind bars for all the lives they have ruined.

Vaccines contain a special form of mercury called ethylmercury, which is found within the preservative thimerosal.

Congressman Burton asked CDC head Dr. Julie Gerberding under oath how many studies had been done on mercury toxicity. She quickly said there had been about 2,000 studies. Then he asked her how many had been done on thimerosal.

There was a dead silence for many minutes. He asked again. Without looking up, she mumbled: "None."

He was stunned by her answer.

Here was a mercury-filled vaccine preservative that had been used for 70 years, and yet no one bothered to test it for safety. Recently, new studies have examined it and found that in fact it is much more toxic than methylmercury, the form found in fish. In fact, within the brain, more ethylmercury than methylmercury is converted to the more toxic mercury ion.

Drs. David and Mark Geier recently studied how removing ethylmercury from most childhood vaccines affected autism incidence. They found a definite downward trend. The parents of the over 1 million children whose lives have been destroyed by autism spectrum disorders should demand justice, and the public should insist that all mercury be removed from all vaccines.

--- Protecting Yourself From Mercury ---

- Avoid exposure. This means if you live in a state with high atmospheric mercury levels, either take special precautions or, as a last resort, move. Avoid all seafoods high in mercury, make sure to have dental amalgam fillings removed and avoid all mercury-containing vaccines.

- Have your urine, hair and stool checked for mercury levels. If they are high (above 10 ug/g of creatine) have yourself chelated to remove the mercury. Several laboratories do mercury testing. To get the most accurate test, you must use a chelating agent (a chemical that removes mercury). The most available is DMSA (dimercaptosuccinic acid). DMPS (2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid) works even better. This exam should be performed under the guidance of someone trained in testing. Hair levels do not require chelation.

- Sweating is an excellent way to remove mercury. Due to today's obsession with air conditioning, people rarely sweat. Exercising will increase perspiration, but a new study found that exercise redistributes the mercury, generating higher concentrations in the brain and heart muscle. This is why it is important to remove the mercury.

- NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine) 500 to 750 mg. a day. This substance increases vital cellular glutathione levels - and as you may remember, mercury depletes glutathione. NAC powerfully neutralizes mercury as a poison.

- Aged garlic extract. This extract has been shown to neutralize much of the toxicity and remove a great deal of the mercury from the brain over time. The advantage of this natural substance over drugs is that it can be taken all the time.

- Chlorella. High purified extracts of this plant have been shown to chelate mercury, and they can be taken daily.

- Natural Vitamin E (Unique E) 1,000 IU. Vitamin E has demonstrated ability to protect DNA against mercury damage. Several studies have shown that even in very small doses, mercury can damage DNA and may cause cancer - especially in the brain.

- Transdermal DMPS. DMPS is used to chelate mercury from autistic children. Autism expert Dr. Rashid Battar recently compounded a form that can be rubbed on the skin. It requires a prescription. DMPS produces a more intense removal of mercury - one that lasts for a longer period.

- Cleansing enema. If you have high levels of mercury in your stool (80% of mercury is excreted through feces), receiving a cleansing enema will prevent re-absorption (and thus re-circulation) of the mercury. Oral chelating agents such as EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and DMPS can remove residual mercury from the GI tract.

- Alpha-lipoic acid. This natural and very powerful antioxidant has been shown to efficiently chelate mercury. You can take about 50 to 100 mg. daily with a meal.

- Selenium (Selenomethionine). Take 100 to 200 ug a day. Selenium has been shown to neutralize mercury within tissues and to promote removal of the toxic substance from the body.
